Questions and Answers

Before we go, don't forget to take a look at the picture galleries. And if you have a cell phone, you already have a mindfulness tool right in your hands. Every time you stop to take a picture, you automatically slow down. You start noticing the flowers, the birds, the clouds, the light through the trees, or something you've walked past a hundred times without seeing. That's mindfulness. You're paying attention to the present moment, one picture at a time.

One of the best ways to make walking a habit is to make it interesting. I can't stress this enough. Don't think of your walk as another chore you have to get through. Turn it into a treasure hunt. Your cell phone is also a camera, and that makes it an instant mindfulness tool. As soon as you start looking for something worth photographing, you automatically slow down. You notice the morning light, the colors, the flowers, the reflections, the birds, and all the little things you normally walk right past. Before long, you're not thinking, "Oh no... I have to go for my walk." You're thinking, "I wonder what I'll discover today." That's a completely different mindset, and it makes walking something you look forward to instead of something you have to force yourself to do.

These 48 photographs came from just three different places where I walk regularly. They weren't taken on expensive vacations or in famous parks. They came from ordinary places that became interesting because I started paying attention. The amazing thing is that the more you notice, the more there is to notice. Every season brings something different. The light changes. Flowers bloom. Wildlife appears. Even familiar paths seem new when you're looking at them through the eyes of a photographer. Walking isn't just exercise anymore. It becomes an adventure, and every walk gives you another chance to bring home a few more memories.
